What changes in your fifties, and what doesn't
Oil production falls and water loss rises. Most of the routine stays exactly where it was.

A lot changes in your skin through your late forties and fifties, and most of it comes from one thing: less estrogen. What you need from your routine changes less than you might expect. The four steps stay. A few of the products in them change.
What changes
Less oil. Oil glands slow down as estrogen falls. Skin that was combination or oily often becomes normal or dry.
More water loss. The barrier, the outer layer that keeps water in, holds less of the fats that make it work. Water escapes faster, so skin feels tight and rough, especially in winter.
Less collagen. Skin loses about 30% of its collagen in the first five years after menopause, then keeps losing it more slowly. That is when skin starts to feel thinner and less firm, and lines around the mouth and eyes deepen.
Slower renewal. Skin sheds and replaces its top layer more slowly. Texture can look duller, and cuts and irritation take longer to heal.
Sun damage shows. Dark spots from years of sun often surface now, even if you wear SPF today.
What doesn't change
The order. Cleanse, treat, moisturize, protect. It works the same way at 55 as at 25.
SPF every morning. UV keeps breaking down collagen at any age, and it is the reason spots get darker.
You still don't need twelve products. Four good ones, used every day, do more than ten used now and then.
What to adjust
Cleanse more gently. Foaming cleansers strip the oil you have less of. Use Milk Cleanser morning and night, and Oil Cleanser first in the evening if you wear SPF or makeup.
Add water, then hold it in. Put Hyaluronic Serum on skin that is still damp from washing. It pulls water into the top layers. Then go straight in with a cream so it stays there.
Use a richer cream. Barrier Cream has ceramides, the same fats your barrier is running short of. If your skin is very dry, add a few drops of Face Oil on top at night, or use Overnight Mask two or three nights a week.
Keep a retinoid, but go slowly. A retinoid like Retinal Night Serum is still the most proven thing you can use for lines and firmness. Start with two nights a week, and put your cream on first if it stings. The cream underneath slows it down a little without stopping it working.
Exfoliate less. Once a week is plenty. Skin that repairs more slowly doesn't need more help shedding.
Go past your jaw. Your neck, chest and the backs of your hands show the same changes. Whatever goes on your face can go there too, SPF included.
What to expect
Skincare can't replace the collagen you have lost or undo menopause. It can keep your skin comfortable, smooth its texture, soften fine lines and fade dark spots over a few months. That is a real difference.
If your skin changes quickly, or you notice a spot that grows, bleeds or looks different from the others, see a dermatologist.
